華爾街日報報導，油價持續下跌，讓西非許多產油國家統治者鞏固政權的老方法不管用。他們一向用賣油收入拉攏政治盟友，補貼公共服務，油價跌跌不休，這套方法逐漸無以為繼，在安哥拉就是如此。英國牛津大學政治學者索爾斯說：「如果油價繼續跌，安哥拉總統多斯桑托斯的權力會直線下滑。」
