你分得清rise和raise嗎？看起來很簡單，但世界公民做過隨口小考試，發現這個字的錯誤率竟然高達七成。還有，「很希望有一個外派的機會」，這機會是chance跟opportunity？
分辨意思很像、長得很像的字，不要去記它們的中文意思，而是找到辨別它們的「核心概念」，我們一起來看以下五個例子：
1、rise & raise → 是自動上升 or 人為提起？
rise和raise都有「升起」的意思，但rise大多當不及物，不需要加受詞，例：The sun rises every day.（太陽每天升起。）若有受詞，會在rise之後先加上介系詞，例：The sales rose to USD$100 million.（業務增加到一億。）
raise是及物動詞，後面一定要加上受詞，例：She just raised the rent again.（她又漲房租了。）raise也指「養育」、「舉起」或者是名詞的「加薪」，例：You should ask your boss for a raise.（你應該跟你老闆要求加薪。）
2、Chance & opportunity → 是機率 or 期待？
chance是機率，大部份指偶然的機會，經常含有僥倖的意味。Opportunity多指特殊的機會，含有期待、願望的意味。兩者有時可以互換，但當chance可表示可能性時，不能用opportunity代替。例如：
A strange chance had landed me upon the French coast.（一個奇怪的機會使我站在法國的海岸上。）
She waited a long time without finding opportunity for a new departure.（她等了很長時間都沒有找到新的動身機會。）
There is a chance that he may be alive.（他也許活著也說不定。）
