美國以0：1敗給德國，但以淨球數優勢，在G組以第二名晉級，成為第3支進入十六強的中北州球隊，也是世界盃第一次。

中北美洲球隊在世界盃最佳成績為四強，但要追溯到1930年第一屆世界盃，美國後來在準決賽敗給阿根廷。

這一次中北美洲球隊有美國、宏都拉斯、墨西哥與哥斯大黎加踢進世界盃，除宏都拉斯外，皆晉級到十六強。

墨西哥一向為中北美洲強權，隊史世界盃最佳成績分別為1970年與1986年世界盃八強，並是從1994年美國世界盃起，連續6屆踢進16強。

美國與墨西哥上屆都進到十六強，而哥斯大黎加隊史第二度晉級到淘汰賽階段，且從烏拉圭、英格蘭與義大利圍繞的死亡之組中，以分組第一晉級，成為本屆最大黑馬。
